![]() Each block is illuminated with tiny white LED lights for a soft, festive glow, adding to the fun. design features red, blue and white blocks, detailed with painted white stars, "Happy 4th of July" greetings, and a flag-inspired map of the USA topping it all. Three proud blocks and 14 twinkling lights stack up for one star-spangled message-wishing you a Happy 4th of July! A festive, freestanding decoration you'll only find here, the Patriotic Lighted Block Sign is exclusively designed in sturdy, wood-like MDF. “We were there because the flag represented our freedoms - freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion.#content-345925. “For us veterans, the flag represents why we served,” Buss says. Instead, he believes the flag’s power to evoke patriotism and pride after all these years is most important. The House of Representatives’ 1977 book about the flag states: “The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun.”Īlthough most Americans today aren’t aware of the specific symbolism behind the flag’s red, white and blue, flag expert Buss is not concerned. But there’s also a lesser-known interpretation for the Stars and Stripes. The 50 stars stand for America’s 50 states, while the 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 colonies. The significance behind the flag’s design is more commonly known than that of its colors. “Red for courage and readiness to sacrifice white for pure intentions and high ideals and blue for vigilance and justice.” “The colors of our flag signify the qualities of the human spirit we Americans cherish,” Reagan said. President Reagan even put his own spin on the matter when he proclaimed 1986 the Year of the Flag. Some now say that red represents the blood spilled by the patriots and those who fight to protect our country. Over the years people have altered Thomson’s original interpretation. “They come from the three colors that the Founding Fathers had served under or had been exposed to.” “Our heritage does come from Great Britain, and that was some of the thought process that went about in coming up with our flag,” Buss says of the American flag’s red, white and blue. Mike Buss, a flag expert with the American Legion, says that the most obvious reason for the flag’s colors is that they were simply taken from our mother country’s flag - the Union Jack of England. Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue… signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.” ![]() “The colors,” Thomson said at the time, “are those used in the flag of the United States of America. ![]() Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, explained the significance to Congress when he presented the seal. Heraldic devices such as seals have specific meanings for each element and color, and the U.S. Red, white and blue were chosen, and the Great Seal was officially adopted on June 20, 1782. The committee was instructed to draw up a seal that reflected the Founding Fathers’ beliefs and values, as well as the sovereignty of the new nation. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution authorizing a committee to develop a seal for the country. The colors and their significance still trace back to the birth of the country, and had very specific meanings in the creation of the Great Seal a year earlier. ![]() The three colors did not have any official meaning when the flag was adopted in 1777. Yet the resolution never said a word about the significance behind the choice of red, white and blue. On Jin Philadelphia, the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress adopted a resolution that read the following: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.”Īnd with these words, the Stars and Stripes were born. But many never even stop to ask the question, “Why does America salute the red, white and blue?” Follow Fourth of July, we flaunt Uncle Sam hats, wave our flag, and watch fireworks shoot sparks into the night sky. ![]() Ross Island lies at the southern end of the late Miocene to Recent Terror Rift (Fig. Despite intriguing insights from igneous petrology, no geophysical images have been obtained to date which reveal the source-to-eruption magmatic process including external controls on pathways and staging. Its desiccating effect raises the solidus temperature of the magma promoting crystallization and differentiation. This gas flux is an important heat supply, buffering the conditions of final phonolite differentiation that is modeled to be near 1000 ☌ in the 4–7.5 km depth range 9, 10, 11, 12. CO 2 emissions from the Erebus lava lake and fumaroles exceed the rates possible from estimated magmatic solubilities and crystallization, thus requiring deep-sourced, upper mantle CO 2 streaming through the plumbing system. Simplistic calculations suggest the formation of Erebus volcano requires >4000 km 3 of basanite, which in turn requires low degrees of partial melting of >80,000 km 3 of the upper mantle peridotite 3. The alkali-rich Erebus phonolite has been modeled as evolving by fractional crystallization of a parental basanite sourced from an enriched upper mantle through a series of intermediate composition magma reservoirs 3, 8, 9. The upper right orientation is ~180 o rotated from the main and lower panels. Upper right inset places location of lower right view within Antarctica. Volcano mounts include Bird (BR), Terror (TR), Terra Nova (TN), Erebus (ER), Hut Point (HP) Morning (MR), and Discovery (DS). ![]() Yellow dashed lines represent other antithetic shear zones separating Dry Valleys block (DVB), Royal Society block (RSB), and Skelton block (SB). Other symbols include Southern Victoria Land basin (SVL) and Discovery accommodation zone (D-A-Z). The lower right inset shows regional structural setting 15, 16, 17, including the Ross Fault (green) in the accommodation zone of the terminus of the Terror Rift (TR) and Discovery graben (DG). Hypothesized Erebus fault zone contains principal low-resistivity structure resolved through the crust. Note the warm-colored ellipse region southwest of Mount Erebus indicating conductive volumes in the 0–7 km depth range approximately (Supplementary Information). Coordinate ticks denote both UTM Zone 58S (singles) and latitude–longitude (doubles). Site map showing impedance phase-tensor ellipses at the MT sounding locations over Mount Erebus and Ross Island during three field seasons see text for color and shape designations. Erebus offers a unique opportunity to investigate magmatic system processes from the mantle source to the surface and the enigmatic tectonic-structural controls of extensional magmatism and volatile release. However, they also provide important resources such as rare earth elements and precious metals and thus are important to understand 6, 7. Phonolite magmas in other settings have been explosively destructive 5. Compositionally uniform phonolitic lavas have dominated Erebus volcano eruptions for the last 17 ka 4 (Fig. ![]() Mount Erebus is the only phonolitic volcano with a persistent summit lava lake 3. Phonolitic-series magma is alkali-rich and highly evolved from its parental basanite. Rift settings and alkalic magmas contribute enormous amounts of CO 2 to the global exosphere budget, with climate-forcing level increases of atmospheric concentrations documented several times during Earth’s history 2. Basaltic alkalic magmas are CO 2-rich because they result from low degrees of partial melting of a mantle source often showing signs of being complexly metasomatized 1. Arc magmas typically have volatiles dominated by H 2O from dehydration of subducted oceanic crust. Unlike H 2O-rich subduction arc volcanoes, CO 2-dominated Erebus geophysically shows continuous magmatic structure to shallow crustal depths of < 1 km, as the melt does not experience decompression-related volatile supersaturation and viscous stalling.Īlkalic volcanoes in rift settings stand in stark contrast to calc-alkaline volcanoes in arcs, such as the ring of fire around the Pacific Ocean. This magmatic valve lies within an inferred, east-west structural trend forming part of an accommodation zone across the southern termination of the Terror Rift, providing a dilatant magma pathway. The lateral turn represents a structural fault-valve controlling episodic flow of magma and CO 2 vapour, which replenish and heat the high level phonolite differentiation zone. Here we show using magnetotelluric data that a steep, melt-related conduit of low electrical resistivity originating in the upper mantle undergoes pronounced lateral re-orientation in the deep crust before reaching shallower magmatic storage and the summit lava lake. Seismic studies provide limited images of the magmatic system. Erebus volcano, Antarctica, with its persistent phonolite lava lake, is a classic example of an evolved, CO 2-rich rift volcano. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t go out and explore The Grove. Sadly, Nintendo hasn’t rolled this out to Switch users yet, so if you are interested in the new cosmetics, shortcuts, final updates to tools, and new shops (and the soundtrack), you might want to stick to the Steam version. You play as a cute grape named Concord who has resided over at The Kindergarden ever since he was born, looking over a vine and waiting for a new Greenling to be born, mostly due to the exit being locked. Picogram is actively releasing updates like the recent Autumn Update. The $20 price tag is a bargain in my opinion, netting you around 20 hours of fun but not light-weight gameplay. What Makes It Worth My Time And Money?įor players seeking a cozy gaming experience with actual teeth, this is a great alternative to open-ended games like the aforementioned Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. I appreciated the gender-neutral pronouns in use and I want to give them an extra nod here. Additionally, Picogram, the developer, did a great job with inclusivity in the dialogue of the game. These tracks are available for purchase on Steam. I quite enjoyed the music in every single biome, but a huge shout out for the Summer Bar music. It’s not overly complicated with the direction mechanics to land the catch, but some shadow spots in the water allude you early-on due to their distance from the shore, at least until you get the rod upgraded later on. Fishing is also present using the dowsing rod. It comes into play rather late in the gameplay, but it can be essential for item gathering to complete those late-game weapon powerups before beating the game. Clearly there is also a gardening aspect to the game. New crafting projects are gained from turning in items to the Paperbark Collection, very reminiscent of Harvest Moon/ Stardew Valley. You can also build up Concord’s stats using orbs scattered throughout The Grove, provided you have the right weapon at the right power level. If you slow down to be a completionist it can become a little problematic. The combat can get a bit repetitive during non-boss fights, but it’s not a big deal if you are getting Concord through the towns at a decent pace. ![]() These come in quite handy for battling the Rot monsters and for the boss fights. Many shades of grey, but I don’t want to dip into spoilers so I’ll leave that for you to discover as you play through.Īs Concord progresses from one town/season to the next, there are new “weapon gets” and upgrades that can be earned by doing favors and daily quests. The antagonist in the game, The Rot, is nuanced. Guardian Concord moves from one town area to the next as the story progresses, meeting new characters, working on new storyline elements including restoring that particular area of The Grove. The way it unfolds in steps makes the game rather relaxing while still having purpose, hitting the sweet spot for a good many players. The story unwinds in chapters that correspond to seasons and new sections of The Grove, each building upon the other, culminating in the overarching theme of saving the entirety of The Grove. However, The Grove has other plans for you and you soon find yourself as a newly appointed Guardian with the task of rebuilding the community. Punny, right? This game is full of fun names like that! You start out in a little isolated corner of The Grove as a gardening grape tending to the Kindergarten Vine. This game is not so little despite its Greenling grape protagonist, Concord. ![]() Wonderful callback to the old Day of the Tentacle PC game! The maps, dungeon puzzles, and combat are similar to old-school 2D Zelda games. ![]() Fishing, farming, community building, crafting (in the form of tools built at the architects’ workbenches), and NPC favors are reminiscent of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. Garden Story is a top-down community building action RPG, and like many other games, it shares elements with games that came before it. There you were, minding your business gardening and now you’re growing up way too quickly while saving the world–or in this case, The Grove. Sometimes life throws something new at you. That includes the traditional staples of classified ads- Craig’s List and Auto Trader, but also eBay,, CarsDirect and Vehix. It’s like, oh I don’t know, customer service for free! But the main function of AutoTempest to this day is the broad-reach search of cars for sale across multiple online ad sites. In addition to the search results, AutoTempest has along the way included surveys and questionnaires asking what other tools their users might like. One of the cool things about the team behind AutoTempest has been their engagement with the tool’s users, and the fact that they’ve never been tools with their users. Over time, more auto-related sites have been added to the engine, and in October of 2011, a new, revamped search tool was introduced. AutoTempest goes all the way back to 2006 when it debuted as Hank’s Helper and then evolved as a sister site to the more general, Search Tempest. And while some use it only for pørn and 140-character updates on the banality of their existence, the Internet’s really super handy should you want to buy or sell stuff, and should that stuff include a car, there’s an even handier tool to help you do so. Use of the paper’s antiquated ink on greyed cellulose is fine if you’re selling an iron lung or medicine ball, but for a target audience not yelling at the damn kids on their lawn, there’s this thing called the Internet. In addition to its used car search engine, AutoTempest boasts an array of handy car buying tools including the ability to pull up reviews matching a chosen vehicle, competitive quotes for car insurance and a library of helpful articles on the topic of used car buying.Whether you are buying or selling a car, truck, or kidney, the traditional advertising channel of the newspaper classifieds is no longer of significant value. The improved Canadian friendly search parameters, along with the introduction of AutoTrader.ca results, makes the quest to find used cars listed locally an easier and more efficient experience for Canadians across the country. Canadian car buyers can now simply enter a Canadian postal code into the AutoTempest search engine and get relevant results for both Canadian and American used car listings close by. ![]() ![]() This means that Canadians looking for used cars across the border will no longer have to waste time figuring out and looking up nearby zip codes in the US.
