![]() Mnemonics are basically a memory trick that acts like a peg in the brain to recall information.Ĭhildren seeing squiggly texts on a white piece of paper (or flashcard) is not enough stimuli for the brain to want to keep that information stored long term - hence children remember one day and forget the math facts the next. Did you know that medical students have been using this way to memorize difficult terms for years? I discovered that this struggle to memorize the multiplication facts is not uncommon and that I wasn’t alone.įortunately, I came across some threads talking about how mnemonics are the best system for memorization. I started searching terms like, “my kids can’t learn their times tables, help!”. I was desperate to find a solution to this multiplication nightmare both my boys and myself seemed to be in. How my Kids FINALLY Memorized the Times Tables I’m no brain expert, but one thing was for sure - whatever part of the brain they were using to “memorize” the facts, was not sticking!Ĭo-Founder of Times Tales® explains how mnemonics are used to memorize the times tables. I was beginning to think we would be working on these tables for months. I kept thinking they finally had them memorized, until the next day, they would give me this blank deer-in-the-headlight stare when they were supposed to spout off the answer. We were still doing drills!! It seemed like one endless flashcard after another. Fast Forward One Week into our Times Tables Learning Adventure Adding up seven groups of seven is not so easy unless your name happens to be Rain Man. However, once we got to the upper times tables (6x7, 7x7, 9x8, etc.) it was just a guessing game. If they got stuck on the lower math facts, they could easily revert back to addition to come up with the answer. The flashcards seemed to go fairly well, until we got to the upper multiplication facts. Once they had the concept down, it was time for the drills. We started with the standard process of learning the concept of multiplication first. Schoolwork was not anything they particularly struggled with until we got to learning the times tables. I am a homeschool mom of two very bright boys.
